History of the Holden Adventra

The most body styles of any Commodore

The third-generation Commodore introduced in 1997 gave Holden more body styles than any generation before or after it. A new Holden Ute arrived in 2000, a reborn Monaro coupé followed in 2001, and in 2003 the range gained two more derivatives: the four-door Crewman utility and the all-wheel drive Adventra crossover.

What the Adventra was

The Adventra was not a separate platform but a crossover version of the Commodore, adding all-wheel drive to the rear-wheel drive architecture. That architecture, the GM V-body, was Opel-designed and had underpinned every Commodore since the VB of 1978, with Holden strengthening and enlarging it for Australian conditions.

Place in the range

The Adventra belonged to the busiest period of Commodore expansion, when the one range covered sedans, wagons, utilities, coupés and crossovers. Holden Special Vehicles, which had officially modified high-performance Commodores and their derivatives under its own nameplate since 1987, worked from the same base cars. The Commodore nameplate itself ran from 1978 until 2020.

Design and features

  • All-wheel drive: the feature that set the Adventra apart from the rest of the Commodore range.
  • Crossover body: a high-riding derivative rather than a separate model line.
  • Commodore foundation: built on the same third-generation architecture as the sedan and wagon.
  • Shared launch year: arrived in 2003 together with the Crewman utility.

Holden Adventra versions

  • Adventra (2003): the all-wheel drive crossover described in the Commodore range.
  • Crewman (2003): the four-door utility from the same generation.
  • Holden Ute (2000): the new utility that opened the expansion of the range.
  • Monaro (2001): the coupé that returned to the range in 2001.

The Adventra was a derivative of the Holden Commodore, like the Holden Ute and the Crewman. More cars are in the Holden collection.
