The brand's roots reach back to the Grabowsky Motor Company, opened in Detroit in 1900 and renamed Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1902. General Motors formed the General Motors Truck Company in 1911 and adopted the GMC name a year later.
GMC supplied trucks in large numbers during both world wars, including 600,000 for the US armed forces in the Second World War. The word Truck was dropped from vehicle branding in 1998, and Hummer returned as a GMC sub-brand in 2020.
