Freightliner traces its roots to 1929, when Consolidated Freightways set up a division to build semitractors for its own use. In 1942 it became Freightliner Corporation, which brought out the first truck with an all-aluminium cab.
Owned by Daimler Truck from 1981 to 2021, the company is now part of Daimler Truck North America, alongside Western Star, Detroit Diesel and Thomas Built Buses. It popularised cabover semitractors in North America.
