History of the Deutz F1L 514/51

The type designation

The type designation of the F1L 514/51 gives the main engine data: a vehicle engine with one cylinder and air cooling of the 5 series, with a piston stroke of 14 cm. Behind the slash stands the actual model number. The tractor was developed from the F1L 514/50 and, like its predecessor, had an air-cooled single-cylinder diesel engine producing 15 hp (11 kW).

What was new

Compared with the earlier model, the F1L 514/51 was fitted with a better stepped five-speed gearbox with a differential lock, and it reached a top speed of 23 km/h or 20 km/h depending on the gearbox version. The wheelbase was enlarged, and hydraulic lifts from Bosch and ATE were available as an option. Standard equipment included a belt pulley, an electric starter and a power take-off.

Equipment and versions

Further accessories such as a mower or an auxiliary gearbox with a creep speed could be ordered from the factory. The tractor could also be ordered as a plantation version with an external width of 1200 mm. In total 28,848 tractors of the F1L 514/51 type were built between 1951 and 1956, when the model was renamed the F1L 514/1.

Design and features

  • Air-cooled single-cylinder diesel: 15 hp from one cylinder, with a 14 cm piston stroke.
  • Five-speed gearbox: better stepped than before, with a differential lock.
  • Faster than its predecessor: 23 km/h, or 20 km/h with the alternative gearbox.
  • Practical standard equipment: belt pulley, electric starter and power take-off.
  • Optional extras: Bosch and ATE hydraulic lifts, a mower, a creep gear and a narrow plantation version.

Deutz F1L 514/51 versions

  • F1L 514/51 (1951–1956): the standard tractor with the original designation.
  • F1L 514/1 (from 1956): the same model under its later name.
  • Plantation version: an external width of 1200 mm for rows of crops.
  • Tractors with creep gear: an optional auxiliary gearbox for very slow work.

The later D-series is described in Deutz D-Serie, the DX range in Deutz DX, and the brand in Deutz-Fahr. More machines are in the Deutz collection.
