BYD Auto was set up in 2003 by BYD Company, a battery manufacturer, after it took over Xi’an Qinchuan Automobile. Its first own design, the petrol-engined F3, went into production in 2005; the F3DM plug-in hybrid followed in 2008 and the e6, its first battery-electric car, in 2009.
The company makes most of its components in-house, from batteries to electric motors and electronic controls, and in 2022 it stopped building purely petrol and diesel vehicles. From 2021 it has sold cars in Europe, Southeast Asia, Oceania and the Americas, and in 2023 it became the best-selling car brand in China.
