The F0 was unveiled at the 2007 Guangzhou motor show under the name BYD F1. It went on sale in July 2008 and was produced until 2015. In 2009 the car cost about US$6,700 and was quoted at 56 mpg-US, or 4.2 litres per 100 km.

The design is an unlicensed copy of the European Toyota Aygo. The 1.0-litre petrol engine produces 50 kW (68 PS) at 6000 rpm and 90 N·m of torque between 4000 and 4500 rpm, enough to accelerate the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.80 seconds.

The petrol versions were discontinued, but in 2019 BYD launched an electric version under its new e series as the BYD e1. The e1 has a front-mounted 45 kW electric motor producing 110 N·m and driving the front wheels.

In its most basic Latin American configuration, without airbags, ABS or electronic stability control, the Chinese-made F0 received 0 stars for adult occupants and 1 star for toddlers from Latin NCAP 2.0 in 2016.
