The company began as the Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company and took the Autocar name in 1899 when it moved to Ardmore, near Philadelphia. It built cars and, from 1899, trucks; by 1907 it had decided to concentrate on commercial vehicles, and its last cars of its own manufacture were produced in 1911.
White Motor Corporation took Autocar over in 1953 and Volvo Trucks bought White in 1981. In 2001 GVW Group acquired Autocar and revived it as an independent company building custom-engineered heavy-duty trucks.
