History of the Audi A8

The A8 replaced the Audi V8 in 1994 and was the first mass-produced car with an aluminium chassis. The Audi Space Frame was developed with Alcoa under an agreement Ferdinand Piëch signed in 1982; the aim was a car substantially lighter than its rivals, to offset the weight of permanent four-wheel drive, and the final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was frozen in 1991. A prototype in polished aluminium was shown at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show, production began in June 1994 and North America received the car in October 1996. The saloon came in two lengths, the A8 L adding 127 mm of rear legroom. At launch the engines were 3.7 and 4.2 V8s with 230 and 300 PS; a 2.8 V6, a 2.5 V6 TDI and the 340 PS S8 followed in 1996, and in 2001 the 6.0 W12, of which only 750 were made. The D2 was built until 2002.

D3 (2002)

The second generation was larger and offered in two lengths, with a more sporting interior. It introduced a 4.0 TDI, later replaced by a 4.2 TDI, and shared its mechanicals, but not its aluminium body, with the Volkswagen Phaeton. The 2005 facelift brought the single-frame grille that had appeared on the 6.0 W12 in 2003, rectangular fog lights and new rear lights, and the range grew to include a 4.2 FSI V8 with 350 PS and a 6.0 W12 with 450 PS. The MMI control system and an armoured A8 L W12 Security Edition came with this generation.

D4 and D5

The D4 was built from 2010 to 2017 with a facelift in 2013, and the D5 from 2017 to 2026, facelifted in 2021. In February 2026 Audi stopped taking orders for the A8 in Germany, and in March 2026 it confirmed that a successor was in development while the D5 was being wound down. Between 1999 and June 2026, 105,669 A8 and S8 cars were registered new in Germany, with 1999 the best year at 7,097.

Design and features

  • Audi Space Frame: an all-aluminium monocoque co-developed with Alcoa, used by every A8 generation.
  • Safety firsts: in 1997 the A8 and A6 were the first production cars with electronic stability control for four-wheel-drive cars and with both front and rear side airbags.
  • W12: the compact 6.0-litre engine was made by joining two VR6 units at the crankshaft.
  • State car: German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder chose the A8 as his official car in 1998, breaking with the tradition of Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars.
  • S8: the high-performance version arrived in 1996 with standard quattro and was built only in Neckarsulm.
