The Zetor Proxima went on sale in 2004 and grew into the most popular model line in the Zetor range. It is a universal farming tractor built around Zetor’s own four-cylinder engines, sold in three versions and used for field work, forestry and municipal service.

History of the Zetor Proxima

Zetor’s position at the turn of the millennium was uncertain. The state-owned enterprise faced bankruptcy and the brand could have disappeared; in June 2002 the Slovak company HTC Holdings bought it and invested in stabilising and restructuring the business. The Proxima, launched two years later, was one of the products on which the revived company built its future.

Start of the range

The Proxima was the first model of the JRL, the light unified series. Production began in 2004 with the models numbered 6421, 6441, 7421, 7441 and 8441, covering 61 to 82 hp. For 2007 Zetor prepared the Proxima Plus with types 8541, 9541 and 10541, giving 82 to 101 hp. The range was then organised into three lines, Proxima CL, Proxima GP and Proxima HS, covering 80 to 120 hp, with a wide choice of transmissions.

Transmissions

The differences between the three lines are largely in the transmission. The CL is the only version to offer creeper speeds, in a 20/4 layout with a lowest speed of 0.2 km/h, which makes it suitable for very slow work such as planting or trenching. The most powerful HS has a four-speed gearbox with a three-stage torque multiplier, known as PowerShift, a hydraulic reverser called PowerShuttle and a clutch button on the gear lever. The GP sits between the two.

Design and use

The Proxima is described by Zetor as a universal, reliable and robust farming tractor, with four-cylinder engines chosen for low fuel consumption and a simple construction with a minimum of electronics. It is used with mounted and trailed farm machinery, industrial adaptors and for agricultural transport, and it is common in agriculture, forestry and municipal service. In 2019 the range was presented in the new Zetor design language developed with the Italian studio Pininfarina. The Proxima remains one of the most familiar modern Zetors in central Europe and the obvious successor to the numbered tractors of the twentieth century.
