History of the Volvo FMX
The first-generation FMX arrived in 2010, sharing its platform and components with the FM. Every FMX has been available with a choice of 11- and 13-litre Euro 5 engines, the D11 and D13, and the production version went on sale in Europe in autumn 2010 and worldwide in 2011.

A facelift was unveiled in April 2013 with sales from September that year. It brought darkened halogen HID headlights borrowed from the base equipment of the FH16, a refreshed grille and a redesigned dashboard with two digital dials and two analogue gauges, plus a new steering wheel and an infotainment system. Volvo Dynamic Steering became standard, and the range was offered with carry-over engines meeting Euro VI.
Second generation
The completely new FMX was unveiled on 27 February 2020 as a rugged alternative to the standard FM, and was among the first models launched under Volvo Trucks’ new president Roger Alm. It came with darkened LED headlights, a steel and polypropylene bumper, an energy-absorbing box construction and a 3 mm skid plate, while keeping a new-generation steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen infotainment system. Sales began later in 2020.
What it is for
The FMX is aimed at construction and heavy distribution work where the truck leaves the road regularly. Its protected front end, higher ground clearance and sturdy bumper distinguish it from the FM, while the shared cab and driveline keep it cheap to maintain alongside the rest of a mixed fleet.
Design and features
- Rugged front end: steel and polypropylene bumper and a 3 mm skid plate.
- Two engine families: 11- and 13-litre units from launch.
- Volvo Dynamic Steering: standard from the 2013 facelift.
- Digital cab: digital dials in 2013, a fully digital cluster and touchscreen in 2020.
- FM base: the same cab and driveline as the road-going FM.
