History of the Valmet 6100
The Valmet 6100 appeared in 1991, while Valmet was still a Finnish state-owned industrial group. Its three-cylinder turbocharged engine of 3,299 cm³ produced 79 hp, and the tractor carried a 165-litre fuel tank — a generous capacity for a machine of this size, suited to long working days.
The early 1990s were a period of rapid change for the company. In 1994 the Finnish state reorganised its holdings and Valmet’s tractor operations were transferred to a joint company with Sisu trucks, creating the Sisu-Valmet brand. The 6100 was therefore one of the last tractors developed under the old Valmet structure.
In 1997 Sisu, including the tractor business, was acquired by Partek. A year later the brand name changed from Valmet to the transitional ValtraValmet, and in 2001 it was shortened to Valtra. The 6100’s production run ended in 1994, before those later changes, so the model is remembered as a Valmet.
The tractor was built at Suolahti, where Valmet had moved its tractor production in 1969. The plant remained the centre of Valmet and Valtra tractor manufacturing, and in 2004 Valtra became part of the American AGCO Corporation.
