History of the TVS Wego
Launch and place in the range
TVS introduced the Wego in 2010, after a long run of Scooty variants, to enter the higher-end part of the Indian scooter market. The company presented it as a unisex, dual-usage machine rather than a model aimed at one kind of rider. It was designed around 12-inch wheels, a low seat height for an easy reach to the ground, an external fuel filler and storage space under the seat, and it had a full metallic body for sturdiness.
Engine and technology
The scooter is powered by a 109.7 cc CVT-i engine with a variomatic transmission, described by TVS as providing power on demand. The company claimed a fuel economy of 62 km/L, and the engine used a low-friction design with a moly-coated piston and low-friction engine oil. The Wego was fitted with a stainless steel muffler guard, a fully digital instrument console with a trip meter, service reminders and low fuel and low battery indicators, telescopic front suspension, gas-filled rear shock absorbers and a patented easy centre stand.
Practical details included a dual-side handle lock for parking, a kick-start mechanism that lets the rider start the scooter while seated, a luminous ignition key, tubeless tyres, body-coloured grab rails, blacked-out alloy wheels and two-tone colour schemes. The Wego was offered in ten colours, among them metallic orange, volcanic red, deep sky blue and midnight black, as well as orange, red and blue dual-tone finishes.
Body balance and braking
The Wego introduced what TVS called body balance technology: an ergonomic design combined with an engine placement that gives an optimum centre of gravity, which the company says improves manoeuvrability and stability on varying road conditions. The scooter also features Sync Braking, a system that integrates the front and rear brakes when pressure is applied to either, multi-refractor headlamps and an optional disc brake.
2017 update and run-out
In 2017 TVS introduced a BS IV compliant version of the Wego with a USB charging port, silver oak panels and a dual-tone seat, launched in two new colours, metallic orange and T-grey. High demand for the TVS Jupiter eventually pushed the Wego out of the Indian market, but the model continued to be supplied to overseas markets.
Awards
The Wego won four Scooter of the Year awards in 2011, from CNBC TV18 Overdrive, Business Standard Motoring, NDTV Car and Bike and Bike India, and received the India Design Mark in 2014. It was also named India’s Best Executive Scooter by J.D. Power two years in a row, in 2015 and 2016.
