History of the TVS Apache
From Fiero to Apache

TVS had partnered with Suzuki for 19 years and had built several two-stroke motorcycles for India. When emission norms changed, the market needed more fuel-efficient and less polluting four-stroke machines, but Suzuki was globally known for two-strokes and did not have strong four-stroke research and development. That led to the late arrival, in 2000, of the TVS-Suzuki Fiero, developed specifically for India. A market for low-displacement performance motorcycles was also growing, as the success of the Hero Honda CBZ showed, and the relatively powerful Fiero was well received. After TVS and Suzuki separated in 2001, TVS continued the Fiero and its iterations as the TVS Fiero and TVS Fiero FX.
The first Apache
In 2005 TVS entered the 150 cc performance class, then dominated by the Bajaj Pulsar, with the TVS Apache 150 IE-Surge, the first of the Apache series. It was a product of TVS’s own research and development, with many changes to the existing Fiero 147 cc engine that raised output from 12 bhp to 13.5 bhp and improved efficiency. Design, suspension, brakes, frame and styling were also revised, and the company claimed the Apache had the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class and was therefore the quickest.
The Apache family
Successors and current variants use engines based on the same platform but with significant changes: an oversquare engine, four valves, a balance shaft, oil cooling, ram-air assist cooling, fuel injection and performance improvements. The TVS Apache RR 310 and TVS Apache RTR 310 are the exception: they are based on the same engine and technology as the BMW G310R.
Brakes, ABS and updates
The Apache was the first bike in India with a petal disc brake, which disperses heat better and allows fewer brake fades, and the same model introduced ABS to a two-wheeler in India for the first time. Earlier Apaches had a wheelbase of 1,260 mm, which made for better turn-in at the expense of stability; the Apache RTR 180 ABS brought dual-channel ABS to the line-up and to the country in 2011. In February 2019 an ABS-equipped Apache RTR 160 4V was announced, and on 28 February the ABS version of the older Apache RTR 160 was launched. In January 2020 a revised Apache RR 310 with a BSVI-compliant engine was launched in India, and in 2020 BS6 engines reached the whole line-up, with significant improvements to the RTR 200 4V and RR 310.
Awards
The TVS Apache RTR 180 won Performance Bike of the Year 2009 at the Business Standard Motoring Awards, and the Apache RTR 200 4V was named NDTV Motorcycle of the Year up to 250 cc for 2017.
