History of the Renault Twingo
The first Twingo
The original Twingo was launched in April 1993 and sold in European left-hand-drive markets until August 2007, with intermediate restylings in 1998, 2000 and 2004. It was designed under the direction of Patrick Le Quément and derived from a concept developed in the W60 project when Gaston Juchet was Renault’s chief designer; the project aimed at replacing the Renault 4 with a small van-like car. The design was notably similar to the original Honda Today, including the overall shape and headlamps set partly into the front bumper.

Generations two and three
Renault launched the second-generation Twingo in the summer of 2007. The third generation, with four doors and a rear-mounted engine, debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and went on sale in September 2014.
The name and the end
The name is said in some official Renault sources to blend twist, swing and tango, although an official Renault press release has explicitly denied that derivation. Production of the Twingo ended in the summer of 2024, when it was replaced by the all-electric Renault Twingo E-Tech.
Design and features
- Renault 4 successor: the W60 project was aimed at replacing the R4 with a small minivan.
- Le Quément design: the 1993 car that gave the model its friendly shape.
- Rear engine in 2014: the third generation moved the engine behind the cabin.
- Electric successor: the Twingo E-Tech replaced it in 2024.
Renault Twingo versions
- Twingo I (1993): two-door city car, restyled in 1998, 2000 and 2004.
- Twingo II (2007): second generation.
- Twingo III (2014): four doors and a rear engine.
- Twingo E-Tech (2024): the electric replacement.
The Twingo was meant to replace the Renault 4 and later shared its market with the Renault Modus; its electric relatives include the Renault Zoe. More Renaults are in the Renault collection.
