History of the Modenas GT128

The 2009 flagship

The GT128 arrived in March 2009 as the newest Modenas moped. It was built on a redesigned chassis derived from the X-Cite 130, and it quickly became one of the best-selling mopeds in Malaysia that year. Modenas described it as having the highest specification in its class, close to the Yamaha 135 LC, and as the flagship of its range at the time. Low fuel consumption at economical speeds was one of its selling points against rivals.

The CT110 connection

The GT128 also shaped the model beneath it. The CT110 of the CT series was, in the words of the sources, a redowngraded GT128: it used the GT128 chassis but took its power from a 110 cc engine derived from the Kriss. The CT was the replacement for the Kriss 1 and 2, so the 2009 flagship’s chassis ended up under the company’s mainstream underbone as well.

Recognition

In 2011 the GT128 and the CT series together received the Malaysia Good Design Mark in the public area and transport category. The award recognised the design work behind the two models, which shared chassis thinking and were sold side by side in the Modenas range.

Design and features

  • Redesigned chassis: developed from the X-Cite 130 rather than carried over unchanged.
  • High specification: Modenas placed it close to the Yamaha 135 LC in equipment.
  • Economy: low fuel consumption at economical cruising speeds.
  • Design award: Malaysia Good Design Mark 2011, shared with the CT series.

Modenas GT128 versions

  • GT128 (2009): the flagship moped as launched.
  • CT110: a detuned version using the GT128 chassis with a 110 cc Kriss-derived engine, sold as part of the CT series.

The GT128 grew out of the X-Cite, and its chassis was used for the CT series. The company’s earlier underbone was the Kriss. More machines are in the Modenas collection.
