Modenas Elegan: the first water-cooled Modenas scooter

The Modenas Elegan was launched at the end of February 2004 as the company’s first water-cooled scooter. It was aimed at riders who wanted to travel long distances, and its equipment reflected that: a large fuel tank, generous underseat storage and a digital instrument panel.

History of the Modenas Elegan

A scooter for distance

Modenas moved into scooters in 2003 with the PGO-based Elit and Ceria, and the Elegan followed at the end of February 2004. It was the company’s first scooter with a water-cooled engine, a choice that gave it more power than the air-cooled models and made it suitable for longer journeys. The cylinder was coated with nickel-silicon carbide ceramic, which Modenas said improved reliability over long distances.

Equipment for the road

The scooter was designed around travel rather than the short city trips typical of the class. Its large fuel tank was placed under the handlebars, where it could be filled without lifting a seat, and the underseat storage compartment was unusually generous. The instrument panel was digital, covering the odometer, the fuel gauge and a thermometer — a temperature readout that made sense on a water-cooled machine.

In the Modenas range

By 2004 Modenas offered a wide spread of small machines: the Kriss underbone that had made the company, the PGO-based Elit scooters and the retro Ceria, and the two-stroke Dinamik. The Elegan sat at the top of the scooter range as the long-distance model, a role that no earlier Modenas scooter had been given.

Design and features

  • Water cooling: the first water-cooled engine in a Modenas scooter.
  • Long-distance design: a large tank accessible under the handlebars and a big underseat compartment.
  • Digital instruments: odometer, fuel gauge and thermometer on one panel.
  • Durable cylinder: Ni-Si ceramic coating for reliability on long journeys.

Modenas Elegan versions

  • Elegan (2004): the model recorded in the sources; no other versions are described.

The Elegan joined the PGO-based Elit and the two-stroke Dinamik in the 2003–2004 range. More machines are in the Modenas collection.
