History of the LTI TXII

Second of the modern TX line

The TXII followed the TX1 as the second model in the modernisation and redesign of the London taxi. Where the TX1 had replaced the antique FX4, the TXII was a careful evolution of its immediate predecessor rather than a clean-sheet design, and it stayed in production from 2002 to 2006.

The Ford engine

The biggest difference from the TX1 was the engine. The Nissan diesel of the earlier cab gave way to an intercooled Ford Duratorq unit, the family of engines also used in the Ford Transit, Mondeo and Land Rover Defender. According to the manufacturer, the change increased torque by 21 per cent. Buyers could choose a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic.

Small improvements

The remaining modifications were largely cosmetic or minor improvements to the design and equipment carried over from the TX1. In 2006 the TXII was succeeded by the TX4, which introduced a new front grille, revised bumpers and a different interior.

Design and features

  • Ford Duratorq diesel: an intercooled engine shared with the Transit, Mondeo and Defender.
  • More torque: LTI quoted a 21 per cent increase over the TX1’s Nissan unit.
  • Choice of gearboxes: five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
  • Familiar shape: the body and layout were carried over from the TX1 with cosmetic changes.

LTI TXII versions

  • TXII manual (2002–2006): the five-speed manual version.
  • TXII automatic (2002–2006): the four-speed automatic version.
  • TX4 (from 2006): the successor with new grille, bumpers and interior.

The TXII followed the LTI TX1 and was replaced by the LTI TX4. The last of the older FX4 line was the LTI Fairway. More cars are in the LTI collection.
