History of the Liebherr LR 13000

Development

The LR 13000 was developed in 2009 as the largest crane in Liebherr’s crawler range. With a capacity of 3,000 tonnes it is the strongest crawler crane in the world, and its maximum system length of 246 metres gives it the highest lattice mast ever developed for a crawler crane. The machine is assembled at Liebherr’s plant in Ehingen, where its boom and ballast were shown in 2012 when the crane was delivered for heavy lifts in the port of Bremerhaven.

Working without derrick ballast

For economical operation with large loads the crane is designed to work without derrick ballast, but with the derrick boom fitted, as a standard operating mode. To make this possible the slewing platform ballast was raised to 750 tonnes, considerably more than on the comparable Liebherr LR 11350. A standard operating mode without the derrick boom was not realised by Liebherr.

Transport

The design allows every component to be delivered by low-loader. The crawler tracks are carried separately from the crawler carrier in containers, so that the weight of the track module stays within the limits for road transport.

Design and features

  • Highest lattice mast: a 246 m maximum system length, the tallest ever developed for a crawler crane.
  • 3,000-tonne capacity: the strongest crawler crane in the world at its introduction in 2009.
  • Derrick operation: the crane can work without derrick ballast when the 54 m derrick boom is fitted.
  • Heavy ballast: 1,500 tonnes of derrick ballast and 1,900 tonnes in total.
  • Road-transportable: all components, including the tracks in containers, fit on low-loaders.

Liebherr LR 13000 versions

  • LR 13000 (2009): the standard machine with a 3,000-tonne capacity.
  • Derrick boom mode: 54 m derrick boom and 1,500 tonnes of derrick ballast for the heaviest lifts.
  • Operation without derrick ballast: 750 tonnes of slewing platform ballast on the revolving frame.
  • Lattice tip: boom tip lengths from 18 to 126 m.
  • Related crawler cranes: the LR 12500 and LR 11350 named alongside it in Liebherr’s range.

The LR 13000 is the largest of Liebherr’s crawler cranes; the company also builds the LTM 11200 mobile crane and the T 282 mining truck. More machines are in the Liebherr collection.
