History of the Keeway Hurricane

The Hurricane has been built since 2004 and is one of the longest-serving 50 cc scooters of the Keeway range. In some markets it was sold as the Keeway Easy. Its engine is a horizontal air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke of 49 cm³ derived from a Minarelli design, rated at 1.32 kW, or 1.8 hp, at 5,300 rpm, which gives a top speed of 45 km/h; a 25 km/h version was available as well. A four-stroke engine of the same capacity was added to the range later.

The chassis is a simple step-through scooter layout on 10-inch wheels, with a disc brake at the front and a drum at the rear, and a brake-force limiter on the front wheel. The scooter has both a main and a side stand, a storage compartment in the front shield and a luggage rack behind the seat. Dry weight is 81 kg and the fuel tank holds 5.2 litres. The engine is fed with Super Plus or Super petrol and is not suitable for E10, so owners have to check the pump before filling up.

Design and features

  • Minarelli-derived two-stroke: a 49 cm³ air-cooled single rated at 1.32 kW (1.8 hp).
  • Two starting methods: an electric starter plus a kickstarter as a backup.
  • Front disc brake: with a brake-force limiter at the front wheel.
  • Everyday storage: a compartment in the front shield and a luggage rack.

Keeway Hurricane versions

  • Hurricane (45 km/h): the standard version.
  • Hurricane 25 km/h: a restricted version for stricter moped rules.
  • Four-stroke Hurricane: a later version with a four-stroke engine of the same capacity.
  • Keeway Easy: the same scooter under its other market name.

The Focus sat next to the Hurricane in the Keeway range; the ARN and RY8 are other 50 cc scooters of the brand. More models are in the Keeway collection.
