History of the Keeway Focus

The Focus was introduced in 2003 and stayed in the Qianjiang catalogue until 2006, when the F-Act took its place. In the Keeway range it sat between the Hurricane and the Matrix, and it shared its layout with the other small scooters of the brand: a step-through body, small wheels and an automatic belt transmission.

Its engine was a horizontal air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke of 49 cm³, a copy of a Minarelli design, which gave 2.1 kW, or 2.9 hp, and 3.5 Nm of torque. As with the other 50 cc scooters of the brand, the version sold in Europe was held to 45 km/h by a distance ring in the stepless belt transmission, so that it could be ridden on a class AM licence. Removing the ring let the scooter reach about 60 km/h. A 25 km/h version was also listed, and the Focus was later offered with 125 and 150 cm³ four-stroke engines.

The equipment was unusual for the class. Besides a helmet compartment under the seat, a luggage rack, a fuel gauge, a clock and both a main and a side stand, the Focus could be started from a distance with a radio key, and it carried an alarm that was armed and disarmed with the same key.

Design and features

  • Remote starting: a radio key starts the engine without the rider sitting on the scooter.
  • Alarm from the key: the same key arms and disarms the alarm.
  • Practical equipment: helmet compartment, luggage rack, fuel gauge and clock.
  • Minarelli-based engine: a 49 cm³ two-stroke that is easy to service and to tune.

Keeway Focus versions

  • Focus 50 (45 km/h): the standard restricted version with the distance ring.
  • Focus 25 km/h: a slower version for stricter moped rules.
  • Focus 125 and 150: later four-stroke versions of the same scooter.

The Focus was replaced by the F-Act and sat in the range next to the Hurricane; the ARN and RY8 are other 50 cc scooters of the brand. More models are in the Keeway collection.
