History of the IMV 2200D

Three engines for one van

The IMV van began with DKW engines, the 981 cc two-stroke of 39 bhp in the IMV 1000. When DKW disappeared, IMV used British Motor Corporation 1,600 engines, and the BMC 1,622 cc unit of 56 bhp named the IMV 1600. The third step came in 1977 with the IMV 2200D and a Mercedes-Benz engine of 2,197 cc and 60 bhp.

What the 2200D was

The van had become a versatile commercial vehicle throughout Yugoslavia in van, minibus and pickup forms, and it was built in two sizes: the regular two-axle model and a longer version with a dual rear axle. The 2200D continued that body range with the largest engine yet offered in the line.

The factory around it

IMV had started in 1954 as Moto Montana, selling and then assembling DKW Schnellaster vans, and took its own name in 1959. Building on the British engine link, it assembled Austin cars under licence between 1967 and 1972, then signed an agreement with Renault in 1972 and began assembling the Renault 4. In 1988 the car side became the joint venture Revoz, wholly Renault’s since 2004. The company also built Adria caravans from 1965 and developed a motor home division in the early 1980s, spun out in 1995 as Adria Mobil.
