History of the Honda Stream
A sporty seven-seater

The first-generation Stream went on sale in Japan on 27 October 2000 and in Europe in 2001. It was largely based on the Civic, with the same flat chassis but 100 mm added in length to fit the third row of seats; Honda described it in brochures as a sporty seven-seater. It came with a 1.7-litre D17 engine or the 2.0-litre K20A, matched to a four-speed automatic or a five-speed automatic with sequential mode respectively; some export markets also got a manual.
Engines and drive
At launch in Japan the 1.7 in G and L trim had a four-speed automatic and front- or four-wheel drive, while the 2.0 in iL and iS trim was front-wheel drive only with a five-speed automatic. By January 2001 a four-wheel-drive version of the larger engine with a four-speed automatic had been added. The 1.7 produced 130 PS, the 2.0 154 PS, and the 2.0 in four-wheel-drive form 158 PS.
Facelift and Absolute
The first-generation Stream was facelifted in September 2003. In December 2003 the Honda Stream Absolute debuted, a sportier-looking variant with a direct-injection 2.0-litre K20B engine and CVT. The K20B was Honda’s first lean-burn direct-injection petrol engine, offered only in Japan under the RN5 model code, and no other Honda used direct injection until the Earth Dreams engines of 2012. A 1.7-litre Absolute was also sold without technical changes. From 2004 the car was sold with six seats in some markets, and the second generation was presented in July 2006.
