History of the Honda Dio
The first Dio

Introduced in 1988, the Honda Dio AF18 was the first model in the series. It was powered by an air-cooled 49 cc two-stroke AF18E single with electric start. Early models had a 12 mm crankshaft and produced 6.4 PS, while later revisions raised output to 6.8 PS. The AF18 established the layout and styling that characterised later Dios.
Special editions and the SR
Several special editions of the AF18 were built, including the SE, Aztek Edition, Marine Edition and SP; the SP used the sportier look of the later Dio SR but kept the standard specification. In 1990 Honda introduced the Dio SR (AF25), a higher-specification variant with revised suspension, a front disc brake, an upgraded intake and airbox and sport styling. The standard AF18 was revised in the same year with the new intake and airbox, and both stayed in production until the first-generation platform ended in 1992.
Second generation and four-strokes
The Honda Super Dio (AF27) arrived in 1991 as the second generation, with an all-new chassis and more aerodynamic bodywork. In 2001 Honda introduced a four-stroke version, moving 50 cc production to Sundiro Honda in China; HMSI has also built a four-stroke Dio in India since 2001.
