History of the Hanomag Garant

The Garant Typ 11/4 was presented in 1934 as the successor to the Hanomag 4/23 PS. It was technically the same as the 4/23 PS Typ 11 but received a four-speed gearbox instead of the earlier three-speed. Its 1,097 cc engine still produced 23 PS, and the full convertible was dropped from the range.

Alongside the Garant, Hanomag offered the Kurier Typ 11 K. The K stood for the box-profile low frame that replaced the usual U-profile pressed-steel frame; the Kurier used the Garant’s engine and was sold only as a closed saloon. In the following year the Garant received a larger chassis but kept its engine unchanged as the Typ 11/35; unlike its predecessor it now had independently suspended front wheels carried on transverse springs, and it was offered only as a cabrio-limousine. As the Typ 11/36 it was built unchanged in 1936, now also as a saloon.

By 1938 Hanomag had built 11,947 Garants and 10,414 Kuriers. In that year the Hanomag 1,3 Liter replaced both models, ending the line of small Hanomag cars that had begun with the 1.1 Litre.

Design and features

  • 1,097 cc engine: a four-cylinder unit of 23 PS, carried over from the 4/23 PS.
  • Four-speed gearbox: one gear more than the three-speed of its predecessor.
  • Cabrio-limousine body: the full convertible was dropped, but an open cabrio-limousine remained.
  • Independent front suspension from 1935: the Typ 11/35 put its front wheels on transverse springs.

Hanomag Garant versions

  • Garant Typ 11/4 (1934): the first version, on the 4/23 PS chassis with a four-speed gearbox.
  • Garant Typ 11/35 (1935): larger chassis, independently suspended front wheels, cabrio-limousine only.
  • Garant Typ 11/36 (1936): built unchanged, now also available as a saloon.
  • Kurier Typ 11 K: the closed-saloon sibling with the box-profile low frame and the Garant engine.

The Garant was replaced by the Hanomag 1,3 Liter; the larger Rekord stood above it in the range, and the Kurier was its closed-saloon sibling. More models are in the Hanomag collection.
