The Club Car Precedent arrived in 2004 as the successor to the long-running DS and took over as the company’s standard golf car. Over the next fourteen years it was developed into the i2 and i3 versions, became the world’s first connected golf cart, and was finally replaced by the Tempo in 2018.

History of the Club Car Precedent
By 2004 the DS had been Club Car’s main golf car for nearly a quarter of a century, and the company replaced it with a new line called the Precedent. The new car was designed for golf courses first: it was the model that fleets would order in numbers, and it was soon the standard Club Car seen on courses around the world.
The Precedent was developed steadily rather than replaced. The next version, the Precedent i2, was presented to a positive reception, and in 2008 the car received an all-new drive system. In the same year Club Car’s partnership with GPS Industries produced the Precedent i3, described by the company as the world’s first connected golf cart: one system linked an entire golf fleet to the clubhouse and gave golfers new options such as score tracking. The i2, i3 and the 4Fun model were used by golf courses, while the i2 was also offered for personal use.
The connection between the two companies deepened in 2017, when Club Car’s parent Ingersoll Rand bought GPS Industries, which had supplied the fleet management system since 2009. A year later, in 2018, Club Car launched the Tempo, which replaced the Precedent as the company’s standard golf car; the Precedent remained in service on courses in large numbers.
