History of the Can-Am Outlander

The 800 of 2006

The Outlander 800 was launched in 2006 with an 80-degree V-twin, using TTI suspension in the back and double A-arms in the front. It belonged to the second wave of Bombardier Recreational Products ATVs: BRP had entered the market in February 1998 with the Traxter, a utility-based machine, and later that year began work on the DS650 for sports riders.

Racing and the rebranding

In late October 2005 BRP won the GNCC Racing Series Championship in the Utility Modified ATV class on an Outlander 800. Starting in 2007 the company launched and rebranded its ATV segment as Can-Am, and one year after announcing the rebranding it opened a plant in Juarez, Mexico, which took over manufacturing and assembly of the Can-Am Outlander and Renegade model lineups, including the Rotax engines that powered them.

Later versions

The Outlander remained part of the Can-Am range after the rebranding and was developed through several model years. The 2022 Outlander MR model has a front differential, a change aimed at the way the front wheels are driven in difficult terrain.

Design and features

  • 80-degree V-twin: the engine layout that defined the Outlander 800 at its 2006 launch.
  • Mixed suspension: double A-arms at the front and TTI at the rear.
  • Utility role: the Outlander sits in the utility part of the Can-Am ATV range, alongside the sport-oriented Renegade.
  • Front differential on the MR: the 2022 Outlander MR added a front differential to the driveline.

Can-Am Outlander versions

  • Outlander 800 (2006): the original big-bore model with the 80-degree V-twin.
  • Outlander MR (2022): the version with a front differential.
  • Later Outlander models: the line continued in the Can-Am range after the 2007 rebranding and the move of assembly to Juarez.

The Outlander shares its platform family with the sportier Can-Am Renegade and sits alongside the side-by-side Commander and the DS sport ATV. More in the Can-Am collection.
