The BAZ-6306 is a four-axle ballast tractor built by the Bryansk Automobile Plant for towing towed artillery systems and heavy trailers. It was part of the ‘Voshchina-1’ family of 1993, which also brought the BAZ-6909 chassis, the BAZ-6403 tractor and the three-axle BAZ-69092.

History of the BAZ-6306

The Bryansk Automobile Plant was set up in Bryansk on 4 June 1958 as a separate enterprise for special-purpose vehicles. It became the Soviet and later Russian maker of wheeled chassis and tractors with three to six axles and payloads from 14 to 40 tonnes, used for both military and civil equipment.

The Voshchina-1 family

In 1993 the plant’s design bureau worked on the ‘Voshchina-1’ programme, a family of unified four-axle and three-axle vehicles in the 8×8.1 and 6×6.1 layouts. The four-axle side of the family included the BAZ-6909 cargo chassis rated at 18 tonnes, the BAZ-6306 ballast tractor and the BAZ-6403 tractor with a fifth-wheel load of up to 20 tonnes. The three-axle side included the BAZ-69092 chassis of 14 tonnes and the BAZ-6402 and BAZ-64022 tractors, rated at up to 11.5 tonnes on the coupling.

The ballast tractor

A ballast tractor is a heavy prime mover whose own weight provides the traction for pulling loads that have no drive of their own. In the BAZ-6306 this meant towing towed artillery systems, special trailers and transport trailers with a total mass of up to 15 tonnes. The vehicle kept the eight-wheeled 8×8.1 layout of its family.

Place in the range

The BAZ-6306 shared the eight-wheeled running gear and the general layout with the BAZ-6909 and BAZ-6403, but was meant for towing rather than for carrying a payload or a semi-trailer. The plant has continued to build specialised chassis and tractors for military and civil customers ever since.

Design and features

  • Eight-wheel drive: the 8×8.1 layout of the Voshchina-1 family.
  • Ballast-tractor role: built for towing rather than carrying, rated for loads of up to 15 tonnes.
  • Unified family: shared its running gear and components with the BAZ-6909 chassis and the BAZ-6403 tractor.
  • Military and civil use: the same plant built chassis for missile and air-defence systems as well as for cranes, oilfield and construction equipment.

BAZ-6306 versions

  • BAZ-6909: the four-axle 8×8.1 cargo chassis of the same family, rated at 18 tonnes.
  • BAZ-6403: four-axle 8×8.1 tractor with a fifth-wheel load of up to 20 tonnes.
  • BAZ-69092: three-axle 6×6.1 chassis rated at 14 tonnes.
  • BAZ-6402 and BAZ-64022: three-axle 6×6.1 tractors with a coupling load of up to 11.5 tonnes.

The BAZ-6306 belongs to the same works as the three-axle amphibious chassis described in the BAZ-5921 article. The rest of the plant’s output is in the BAZ collection.
