The Avia D90 was one of the models of the D series that Avia introduced in 2000 as the first completely new truck since the Saviem licence. It was offered with the Daewoo-designed Euro 3 engine or a Cummins unit, and it stayed in production at Letňany until 2013; the name returned on the D Initia in 2017.

The D90 is described in the Avia company history on English Wikipedia and in the Czech article on the whole D series.

History of the Avia D90

The D series was launched at the Brno truck show in June 2000 and replaced the A60/A70/A75/A80 range. Its cab was the most important new component: it was styled in Italy, developed with the designers at Daewoo’s engineering centre in Worthing in the United Kingdom, and gave the driver far more comfort than the old Avia cab. The D90 was the model with the long cab.

The new Daewoo D432-100 diesel met Euro 3 without electronic control or exhaust gas recirculation. For Western Europe Avia also offered the Cummins ISBe, initially as a 150 hp unit with a derated 130 hp variant and, from 2003, a 170 hp version. The gearbox was the ZF S5-42 five-speed at launch, and the six-speed cable-shift ZF S6-850 became available with the more powerful engine. The D75, the 7.5-tonne model, proved particularly popular in the UK and Ireland.

The Czech D series in numbers

The Czech Wikipedia article gives the later specification of the range: a length of 5,800 mm, width of 2,200 mm and height of 2,390–2,520 mm; gross weights from 6,000 to 12,000 kg, kerb weights of 3,423–3,635 kg and payloads of 2,567–8,355 kg. The Cummins ISB4.5E5 engine displaced 4,462 cc and produced 117–152 kW at 2,500 rpm, with 602–760 Nm of torque at 1,700 rpm; the fully synchronised six-speed ZF6S850 gearbox was standard. Top speed was 118 km/h and the fuel tank held 120–200 litres.

Euro 4, Euro 5 and the end at Letňany

In 2006, under Ashok Leyland ownership, Avia launched 160 and 185 hp Cummins-powered Euro 4 models and the heavier D120 with a gross combination weight of up to 22,000 kg. The Euro 5 engines of 2009 raised output to 185 and 207 hp, and the range continued to span 6 to 12 tonnes. In 2010 Avia entered the Russian market. Truck production in Letňany ended on 31 July 2013; the cab was then used in India for the Ashok Leyland Boss and Guru.

D Initia

The Czech company Czechoslovak Group bought the Avia brand in April 2016 and moved production from Letňany to Přelouč. After a facelift shown in Moscow in June 2017, production of the Avia D Initia began in September 2017 with Euro 6 Cummins ISB 4.5-litre engines of 150, 180 and 210 hp, at a planned rate of 360–400 vehicles a year. From 2019 the company dropped the smaller D75 and D90 Initia and continued only with the D120 Initia 4×4.

Design and features

  • New cab: styled in Italy and developed with Daewoo’s Worthing engineering centre, with a long version for the D90.
  • Euro 3 without electronics: the Daewoo D432-100 engine needed no electronic control or EGR.
  • Cummins option: 130–170 hp ISBe engines for Western European buyers.
  • ZF gearboxes: five-speed S5-42 at launch, six-speed S6-850 later.
  • Long life: produced from 2000 to 2013, and the name returned on the D Initia in 2017.

Avia D90 versions

  • D90 (2000–2013): the long-cab model of the range.
  • D75: the 7.5-tonne model, popular in the UK and Ireland.
  • D120: the heaviest model, with a gross combination weight of up to 22,000 kg.
