History of the Atlas TW 190
The Atlas name
The firm behind the TW 190 started in 1919 as Hinrich Weyhausen KG in Delmenhorst, producing agricultural machinery and conveyors. The Atlas trademark dates from 1936 and the first fully hydraulic excavator from 1951. By the 1960s the company held an internationally leading position in hydraulic excavator construction, with about 1,000 employees in 1962 at plants in Vechta, Ganderkesee, Löningen and Blackwood in Scotland.
Under Terex
After financial difficulties in 1999 the excavator business passed to EDER Handel und Beteiligungen and in 2001 to the American construction equipment manufacturer Terex of Westport. It then traded as Atlas-Terex GmbH, and machines of this period carried both names. The TW 190 belongs to that era: its badge reads Terex-Atlas. In 2010 the business was sold to the investor Filip S. Filipov and became Atlas Maschinen GmbH, renamed Atlas GmbH in April 2016.
The TW 190 at work
The video on this page shows a Terex-Atlas TW 190 working next to a Hyundai Robex 210LC-7 excavator of a different make. The designation TW identifies a wheeled excavator of the Atlas programme, the road-going branch of a range that also includes crawler and two-way excavators, loading cranes and wheel loaders. The sources consulted give no production years, engine data or weight for the TW 190, so this page describes the model only in the context of the company that built it.
