History of the Atlas AR 65

A separate company for wheel loaders

In 1971 Friedrich Weyhausen, brother of Günter Weyhausen, founded F. Weyhausen GmbH & Co. KG as an independent sister company to the family’s Hinrich Weyhausen KG. The new firm set up its headquarters in Wildeshausen and opened a factory in Westerstede for the production of wheel loaders and backhoe loaders. The AR 65 belongs to that Westerstede line, and the AR prefix in its name stands for Atlas Radlader.

The AR 65 in the range

The AR 65 was listed with a 4,480 kg service weight, a 50 PS engine and a 0.8 m³ standard bucket. The numbering did not follow engine output: the smaller-numbered AR 60 was rated at 65 PS and carried a slightly larger 0.85 m³ bucket, while the AR 70 offered a 1.0 m³ bucket with 66 or 68 PS. The AR 65 Super raised output to 70 PS and weight to 4,700 kg while keeping the 0.8 m³ bucket. A suffix S on an Atlas loader marked a swivel loader and T a telescopic loader, but the AR 65 carried neither.

From Atlas to Weycor

Atlas wheel loaders were sold under the Atlas name until 2013, when the name Weycor was introduced for trademark reasons and used for a transitional period together with the old name. Since the end of 2015 the products have been sold only as Weycor machines. The AR 65 e belongs to that later list; its suffix e stands for emissionsarm, effizient and evolutionär — low-emission, efficient and evolutionary. The rights to the Atlas name itself lie with the separate Atlas GmbH, maker of excavators and loading cranes.

Design and features

  • Compact weight: at 4,480 kg the AR 65 was one of the smaller Atlas loaders, of the kind used on building sites, municipal yards and farms.
  • 0.8 m³ bucket: the standard shovel of the model, matched to a 50 PS engine.
  • Super version: the AR 65 Super added 20 PS and 220 kg for heavier work with the same bucket.
  • Clear naming: AR for Atlas Radlader, with series letters and S or T suffixes distinguishing swivel and telescopic machines.

Atlas AR 65 versions

  • AR 65: 4,480 kg, 50 PS, 0.8 m³ bucket.
  • AR 65 Super: 4,700 kg, 70 PS, 0.8 m³ bucket.
  • AR 65 e: the low-emission, efficient version listed in the Atlas Weycor range.

Other Atlas machines are the Atlas 1304 excavator and the Atlas TW 190. The full collection is under Atlas.
