History of the Alfa Romeo 183T
Unlike earlier Alfa Romeo F1 cars, the 183T chassis was not designed by Autodelta: the main designer was Euroracing’s chief engineer Gérard Ducarouge, who was fired by Alfa less than a month into the season and quickly signed by Lotus. The car was basically an updated version of the 1982 car, the 182, with a newly designed flat bottom.

The big change was the engine: the 1260 V12 that had served the team since 1979 gave way to the 1.5-litre turbocharged V8 890T, rated at 640 bhp against 540 bhp for the V12. It still fell short of the 850 bhp quoted for the turbocharged BMW, Renault and Ferrari engines. The 183T scored 18 points from 29 entries; Andrea de Cesaris took two second places and a fastest lap at Spa-Francorchamps, where he started from the second row and led more than half of the distance.
The car was used in early testing before the 1984 season with new sidepods that later appeared on its successor, the 184T, but was retired before the season began.
