History of the Vento Rebellian

The company behind the name

Vento Motorcycles, Inc. was American, although the name it used is the Italian word for wind. Its history was tied to operations in the United States and Mexico, including motorcycle assembly for export to Mexico. The Rebellian belongs to the models made under that arrangement.

Laredo and San Diego

An assembly and quality-control plant opened in Laredo, Texas, in 1998, and components from outside were brought there to be assembled and checked. By 2006 the company’s headquarters were in San Diego, California, with the Laredo plant still handling assembly and quality control and a support centre for marketers, product development and dealers in Melbourne, Florida.

A Mexican market leader in small two-wheelers

Vento sold more small-displacement two-wheel vehicles in Mexico than Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki combined. In the 2003 financial year it sold 17,840 units in the United States, and 77,600 of its motorcycles went to Chile, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Russia together, counting highway motorcycles, scooters, utility vehicles and ATVs.

Design and features

  • Part of a broad range: Vento’s catalogue covered motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and off-road vehicles.
  • Texas assembly: machines were assembled and quality-checked in Laredo.
  • Mexican focus: the brand’s small two-wheelers outsold its big-name rivals there.
  • Italian name: vento means wind.
