The UTB Universal 650 is the tractor Romanians know simply as the U650, and it is the best-known machine built by Uzina Tractorul Brașov. It combined a 65 hp four-cylinder diesel with a simple mechanical transmission and was exported in large numbers, including to East Germany from 1968.

History of the UTB Universal 650

Uzina Tractorul Brașov grew out of the IAR aircraft factory in Brașov, whose production was turned over to tractors after the Second World War. The works took the UTB name in 1948, and from 1960 it sold both Fiat-based tractors and designs of its own. The Universal range became its main product, and the 650 is the model Romanians remember best.

The Universal 650 was built from 1966 to 1975 for the home market. From 1968 the first examples went to East Germany, where the tractor was sold for the rest of the model’s life and where its simple, repairable engineering was valued. The model stayed in production in Romania long after 1975 – a 1996 example is illustrated above – and in 1996 the Pakistani GM Group bought a licence to produce the Universal in Pakistan as the GM Universal.

UTB itself did not survive the transition. The plant, which had 23,000 employees in 1990, was still making about 4,000 tractors a year in 2002 against a capacity of 32,000, passed through a long and inconclusive privatisation, and was put into liquidation in 2007. The Universal, however, outlived its maker: the Romanian design is still built in Pakistan.

Design and features

  • Simple diesel: a 4.8-litre four-cylinder unit with direct injection and electric starting, rated at 65 hp.
  • Two-stage transmission: a five-speed gearbox with a reduction unit gave ten forward and two reverse gears, with a torque amplifier that allowed shifting under load.
  • Hydraulic linkage: a monobloc hydraulic system with automatic draft and position control for mounted implements.
  • Adjustable track: front and rear axles allowed the track width to be changed for different row spacings.
  • Easy to repair: the half-frame layout and uncomplicated mechanics made the tractor maintainable without special tools.

UTB Universal 650 versions

  • Universal 650: the standard rear-wheel-drive tractor with an open platform.
  • Universal 651: four-wheel drive, with a front axle that could be disengaged separately.
  • Universal 651S: the version with chain drive.
  • U650DT Super: a further four-wheel-drive variant.

More Romanian and Eastern European machines are in the UTB collection. Other tractors and utility vehicles of the period are gathered under the marque index.
