History of the Tunturi Maxi

A hand-shifted Pappa-Tunturi

The Maxi was one of the mopeds made by Tunturipyörä Oy, the Finnish company behind the Tunturi brand. In Finland the model is remembered as the Pappa-Tunturi, a nickname it shares with other Tunturi mopeds of the period.

Two gears, and briefly three

The Maxi was hand-shifted and most examples had two gears. Between 1970 and 1973 the factory also built a three-speed version, but it was withdrawn from production because demand for it was small. Unlike the Tunturi Start, the Maxi was fitted with pedals rather than footpegs.

Design and features

  • Hand gear change: the rider shifts by hand, with two gears on most machines.
  • Pedals: the Maxi kept pedals instead of the footpegs used on the Tunturi Start.
  • Short-lived three-speed option: offered from 1970 to 1973 and then dropped for lack of demand.

Tunturi Maxi versions

  • Two-speed Maxi: the usual version, with a hand-shifted two-speed gearbox.
  • Three-speed Maxi (1970–1973): built for three years and discontinued because few buyers wanted it.

The other automatic Tunturi moped of the period is described in the article on the Tunturi Automat. More machines are in the Tunturi collection.
