The Saleen S281 was the company’s core model from 1996 to 2009, built on the fourth and fifth generations of the Ford Mustang. The name came from the cubic-inch displacement of its 4.6-litre V8, and for many buyers the S281 was the definitive Saleen.

History of the Saleen S281
Saleen had built its reputation by modifying Ford Mustangs, but the S281 marked the point at which the company began to present itself as an original equipment manufacturer. The bodywork was designed by Phil Frank, and the model designation changed from the old “Saleen Mustang” to a number based on the engine’s cubic-inch displacement: Saleen 281 CID, or S-281. Options chosen by the customer were shown by a suffix after the number, which is why the range grew into a long list of letters.

The first S-281 appeared in 1996 with a naturally aspirated 4.6-litre two-valve V8 rated at 220 hp, Racecraft suspension upgrades and an aerodynamic body kit. It was commonly based on the Mustang GT and became Saleen’s flagship, with the largest production of any Saleen vehicle up to 2009. When the New Edge Mustang arrived in 1999 the rating rose to 285 hp, and with the fifth-generation car the model became the S281-3V, using three valves per cylinder and producing 335 hp.
The supercharged S-281SC was first offered as an option on the New Edge Mustang in 1999 with 350 hp. It became widely recognised as a separate model in 2000, with a dual gauge cluster above the dashboard and a Saleen heat-extractor hood; in the fifth generation the supercharger was installed upside down, helping output to 465 hp. The S-281C was Saleen’s version of the SVT Cobra, sold with Racecraft suspension and the Saleen body kit but with the 320 hp four-valve V8 left unmodified, a formula that lasted until the Cobra ended in 2004.
The S-281E Extreme arrived in 2002 with a Saleen-built 4.6-litre two-valve V8 replacing the Ford unit. It wore a rear fascia with centre exhaust, a large separate spoiler and Saleen fender badges in place of the Ford logos, and from 2005 gained a front splitter and rear diffuser. The six-speed Tremec T-56 manual used from 2002 to 2009 had originally been developed for the short-lived 2004–2006 Pontiac GTO.
Design and features
- Racecraft suspension: the handling package that became a Saleen signature across the range.
- Phil Frank bodywork: a distinct aerodynamic kit that separated the S281 from a standard Mustang.
- Cubic-inch naming: the 281 badge referred to the displacement of the 4.6-litre engine.
- Suffix options: letters after the number recorded supercharging, Cobra base, Extreme specification or anniversary editions.
- Dashboard gauge pod: the twin-gauge cluster above the dash was a quick way to recognise an S-281SC.
