History of the Sachs SX1

A model from the Nuremberg list

Sachs Bikes was formed in 1995, when Fichtel & Sachs kept its motorcycle production in Nuremberg and sold the Hercules brand and its bicycles to the Dutch ATAG Cycle Group. The machines were sold under the Sachs name, and in the late 1990s the technical director and later chief executive Hartmut Huhn led the development of a new generation of models.

Between scooters and roadsters

The German model list of Sachs Bikes puts the SX-1 at the head of its models, followed by the ZX and ZZ 125, the XTC 125 in two-stroke and four-stroke form, the X-Road 125 and the Roadster models. Like those machines, the SX1 belongs to the company’s small-capacity programme rather than to the 650 and 800 cc roadsters that used Suzuki engines.

The end of the generation

Sachs Bikes became insolvent in June 2006. A management buyout took the company over on 1 January 2007 with the aim of concentrating on scooters, and in 2008 the firm was renamed SFM GmbH. The small motorcycle range of the SX1’s generation was not continued; the scooters and the MadAss carried the brand afterwards.

Design and features

  • Small capacity: part of the Sachs range below the Roadster 650 and 800.
  • Same generation: sold alongside the XTC 125, X-Road 125 and Roadster 125 V2.
  • Nuremberg build: from the factory that had once belonged to Hercules.
  • End of the line: the model did not survive the 2006 insolvency.

Sachs SX1 versions

  • Sachs SX-1: the model as listed by the company.
  • Sachs XTC 125: the sports model of the same years.
  • Sachs X-Road 125: the supermoto, naked and sports mix.
  • Sachs Roadster 125 V2: the roadster with a Yamaha engine.

The 125 cc range is described in Sachs 125, the sports model in Sachs XTC, and the company’s later scooters in Sachs Speedjet. More machines are in the Sachs collection.
