History of the Ram 4000

A Ram built for Mexico

Chrysler also manufactured medium-duty and heavy-duty Ram trucks that were made and marketed only in Mexico. They shared the body and the engineering of the American trucks but were sold in a market where the one-ton model was not the top of the range, and the 4000 was the largest of the pair offered with the 5.9 L V8.

The 3500 and 4000 pair

The range included a 3500 and a 4000 with the 5.9 L V8 rated at 245 hp at 4,000 rpm, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. The trucks looked quite similar to the US version, although they sat on a taller chassis with filler plates under the headlights to make room for it. A 2000 brochure described the two-door chassis cab versions of the Ram 3500 and 4000, with payloads of 3,041 kg and 3,274 kg respectively.

Gearboxes

For Mexico the manual gearboxes came from Tremec. The Tremec 199A was offered from 1994 to 2001 in the 1500, 3500 and 4000 trucks, and the Tremec TR-4050 was used on the Ram 4000 for the 2002 model year. The 4000 disappeared with the end of that generation of the Mexican heavy-duty range, and the Ram name continued in Mexico on the trucks of the later generations.

Design and features

  • Mexican-only model: the 4000 was never sold in the United States, where the one-ton 3500 was the largest standard Ram.
  • A 5.9 L V8: the petrol V8 was rated at 245 hp at 4,000 rpm.
  • Four-speed manual: a Tremec gearbox was the standard transmission.
  • Commercial body: the 2000 brochure lists a two-door chassis cab, ready for a specialist body.
  • A taller chassis: the Mexican heavy-duty trucks sat higher than the American ones, with filler plates under the headlights.

Ram 4000 versions

  • Ram 3500 (Mexico): the smaller of the pair, with a payload of 3,041 kg.
  • Ram 4000: the larger truck, with a payload of 3,274 kg.
  • Tremec 199A trucks (1994–2001): the earlier manual gearbox.
  • 2002 model year: the last of the line, with the Tremec TR-4050.

The 4000 belonged to the same Mexican range as the heavy-duty Ram 3500, and its American relatives are described in the Ram 2500 article. More trucks are in the Ram collection.
