History of the Microcar Spid
The name in the model list
The French Wikipedia article on Microcar lists the Spid among the company’s former models, in a list that also includes the RJ49/RJ125, the DX49/DX125, the 50, Soléa, Lyra, NewStreet, Virgo, the MC1/MC2, F8C, M8, Flex and M.Go. The name gives the Spid its place in the history of the marque but no further information: the sources do not record when it was made, how many were built or what body it had.
The maker
Microcar was founded in 1980 as a division of Jeanneau, a major French sailboat manufacturer, and worked from Montaigu in the Vendée, building voitures sans permis — light quadricycles that can be driven without an ordinary driving licence. In September 2008 the company was acquired by Ligier Automobiles in a deal backed by the Italian private equity firm 21 Investimenti Partners, which created Europe’s second-biggest microcar manufacturer and the largest maker of quadricycles. In 2014 Microcar was absorbed by Automobiles Ligier and became a brand of that company; in 2024 Ligier announced that the Microcar brand would be discontinued, and in early 2025 the factory at Montaigu was closed.
Design and features
- Licence-exempt class: a quadricycle of the voiture sans permis type that Microcar built from 1980.
- Former model: recorded among the company’s past models, not in the range of the final years (the DuĂ© and M.Cross).
- Little documented: the published sources give the name only, without dates or technical data.
Microcar Spid versions
- Spid: the only name recorded in the sources; no separate versions are described.
Other models of the same maker are the MC1 and MC2 and the Virgo. More cars are in the Microcar collection.
