The Massey Ferguson 1155 was the successor to the 1150 and the most powerful tractor in the American part of the range when it appeared in 1974. Its Perkins V8 of 8,849 cc gave 155 ch DIN, and the body introduced the squared-off styling that Massey Ferguson kept for the next twenty years.

History of the Massey Ferguson 1155

More power without a turbo

In the 1970s raising power towards 150 hp met two obstacles. Turbodiesels were not yet trusted, so the number of cylinders had to grow, and four-wheel drive had not yet become common outside articulated tractors. Massey Ferguson answered both by developing the 1155 from the top of the range — the 1080, 1100 and 1150 — with a V8 and, almost always, twin rear wheels to put the power down.

The new look of 1973

The 1155 introduced the styling that the whole marque adopted from 1973: large lettering and a broken-plane grille framed by a ring in brushed metal. It was aimed squarely at American farmers, who pulled trailed rather than mounted implements, so the linkage was not the strongest part of the tractor. The cab had square windows and little padding, but it sat on rubber mounts and could be tilted forward for servicing.

Design and features

  • Perkins V8: 8,849 cc and 155 ch DIN at 2,200 rpm.
  • Multi-Power transmission: twelve forward and four reverse speeds, a development of the gearbox used in the 1100 ten years earlier.
  • Twin rear wheels: almost always fitted in pairs to use the power in the field.
  • Tilting cab: square and sparsely trimmed, but mounted on silentblocs and able to tilt for maintenance.
  • 1973 styling: big lettering and the broken-plane grille that defined Massey Ferguson tractors for two decades.

Massey Ferguson 1155 versions

  • 1155 (1974–1978): the standard American V8 tractor.
  • Twin-wheel versions: the usual working configuration.
  • Predecessor: the 1150 of 1970–1972.

The 1155 followed the 1150 and shared its market with the 1080. More tractors are in the Massey Ferguson collection.
