History of the Lifan 620

The 620 was launched in 2009 as a compact four-door sedan. Its styling was often compared with the BMW 3 Series of the period: the front in particular was said to resemble the German car once the kidney grilles were taken away. Under the bonnet sat a four-cylinder 1.6-litre Tritec engine of 1587 cc, listed with 85 kW (116 PS) or 87 kW.

The car was sold in China and exported to several markets, including Vietnam. In Russia it was assembled by Derways and sold as the Lifan Solano. From 2012 a Tunisian plant assembled the model for European markets as the Martin Motors MM620. In Iran a modified version with the 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine of the Lifan X60 was assembled by Kerman Motor.

For the 2014 model year Lifan introduced a restyled version called the 630, priced from 54,900 to 72,900 yuan, with an electric version also offered. The 630 used a 1.5-litre engine coded LF479Q2 producing 70 kW (94 hp) and 128 Nm, or a 1.5-litre VVT unit coded LF479Q2-B with 77 kW (103 hp) and 133 Nm; both came with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The 650, launched at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, was essentially a restyled 620 with a completely redesigned front and rear and was the replacement for the 620 and 630 sedans. It was priced between 55,800 and 65,800 yuan and used a four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine of 103 kW (140 PS). Based on the 650, the ChangJiang 360e electric compact sedan appeared in 2016 with a 100 kW (134 hp) motor, four doors and four seats, measuring 4625 mm long, 1715 mm wide and 1510 mm high, with a kerb weight of 1,850 kg.

Design and features

  • Tritec engine: the 1.6-litre unit shared with the last-generation Mini gave the 620 about 116 PS.
  • Several facelifts: the 630 of 2014 brought a new look and smaller 1.5-litre engines, and the 650 of 2016 replaced both.
  • Wide assembly network: the car was built or assembled in China, Russia, Tunisia and Iran.
  • Electric derivative: the ChangJiang 360e of 2016 used the 650 body with an electric motor.

Lifan 620 versions

  • 620 (from 2009): the original compact sedan with the 1.6-litre Tritec engine.
  • Solano: the Russian name, assembled by Derways.
  • Martin Motors MM620: Tunisian assembly for European markets from 2012.
  • Iranian version: modified 620 with the 1.8-litre engine of the X60, built by Kerman Motor.
  • 630 (2014): restyled model with 1.5-litre engines of 94 or 103 hp.
  • 650 (2016): replacement for the 620 and 630 with a 1.5-litre 140 PS engine.

The 620 sat above the smaller Lifan 320 and the earlier Lifan 520; its 1.8-litre engine in Iran came from the Lifan X60. More Lifan models are in the Lifan collection.
