History of the Honda Accord
From hatchback to full range

The Accord debuted in 1976 as a compact hatchback, a style that lasted through 1989. The lineup then expanded to include a sedan, a coupe and a wagon. By the sixth generation at the end of the 1990s the car had evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but different bodies and proportions for different markets.
Made in America
In 1982 the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States, when assembly began at Honda’s Marysville plant in Ohio. It went on to be the best-selling Japanese car in America for sixteen years, from 1982 to 1997, and in 1989 it became the first vehicle sold under an import brand to be the best-selling car in the United States.
Growing with each generation
The eighth-generation Accord of 2007 moved further upmarket and grew in size, pushing the sedan from the upper limit of the EPA mid-size class to just above the lower limit of the full-size class. The ninth generation of 2012 shrank again and returned to the mid-size class; the tenth generation, with 123 cubic feet of interior space, was a full-size car once more. The coupe was discontinued in 2017.
A long-running nameplate
In 2023 Honda announced that Accord production would move to Greensburg, Indiana, freeing the Marysville plant for electric vehicle production. In continuous production since 1976, the Accord is Honda’s second longest-running passenger car nameplate after the Civic.
