The FPV GT was a full-size sedan built by Ford Performance Vehicles, the joint venture of Ford Australia and Prodrive, from 2003 until 2014. Across the BA, BF and FG generations it carried a 5.4-litre Boss V8 and later a supercharged 5.0-litre Miami V8, and it finished its run with the GT-F 351, which set an Australian production-car speed record.

History of the FPV GT

BA series, 2003

The FPV BA GT arrived in 2003 with a 5.4-litre Boss 290 V8 producing 290 kW (389 hp) at 5500 rpm and 520 N·m (384 lb·ft) of torque at 4500 rpm. It came with a five-speed TR-3650 manual transmission and 325 mm front rotors by PBR, with 355 mm Brembo front discs available as an option. The more luxurious GT-P was based on the BA Fairmont and added dual-zone air conditioning, Brembo brakes and a trip computer.

BF series, 2005

The BF GT of 2005 used four-piston front and single-piston rear Brembo callipers, while the GT-P moved up to six-piston front and four-piston rear callipers. In April 2007 FPV released a GT 40th Anniversary, all finished in black with gold stripes. In 2008 came the GT Cobra, also called the Cobra R-Spec, all in white with blue stripes. Its 5.4-litre Boss 302 V8 made 302 kW (405 hp) and 540 N·m (398 lb·ft); 400 GT Cobras were built, along with 100 Cobra Utes based on the FPV Super Pursuit.

FG series, 2008

The FG GT of 2008 used a 5.4-litre Boss 315 engine rated at 315 kW (422 hp) at 6500 rpm and 551 N·m (406 lb·ft) at 4750 rpm. The GT-E of the same year was a luxury variant of the GT. In 2010 the supercharged Miami V8 replaced the Boss engines across FPV’s range; in the GT it produced 335 kW (449 hp) and 570 N·m (420 lb·ft). The GT R-Spec of 2012 was built only in black with red highlights.

GT-F 351, 2014

The last GT, the GT-F 351 of 2014, was powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged Miami V8 making 351 kW (471 hp) at 6000 rpm and 551 N·m (406 lb·ft) between 2500 and 5500 rpm. It had six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembo brakes and was limited to 250 km/h. With the limiter removed, Wheels magazine took a GT-F 351 to the Stuart Highway, where the racing driver John Bowe drove it to 297 km/h — a record for an Australian production vehicle.

Design and features

  • Boss V8 line: the naturally aspirated 5.4-litre engine grew from 290 kW in the BA to 315 kW in the FG.
  • Supercharged Miami: from 2010 the 5.0-litre V8 brought 335 kW, and 351 kW in the final GT-F.
  • Brembo brakes: optional on the early GT and progressively standard on the faster versions.
  • Anniversary and Cobra editions: fixed colour schemes and stripes marked the 40th Anniversary of 2007 and the Cobra of 2008.

FPV GT versions

  • GT: the standard V8 sedan through all three generations.
  • GT-P: the luxury version of the BA, with dual-zone climate control and Brembo brakes.
  • GT 40th Anniversary (2007): black with gold stripes.
  • GT Cobra (2008): white with blue stripes, 302 kW; 400 sedans and 100 utes.
  • GT-E (2008): a luxury variant of the FG GT.
  • GT R-Spec (2012): black with red highlights.
  • GT-F 351 (2014): the 351 kW farewell model and the speed-record car.

The GT shared its Falcon base with the turbocharged FPV F6. More cars from the same maker are in the FPV collection.
