History of the Aeon Motor

From plastics to vehicles

The company’s story starts in 1970, when Zhong Jinsheng founded Kuan Mei Plastics Co., Ltd., a business engaged in plastic injection moulding. From 1982 production gradually shifted toward plastic components for motorcycles, and that experience with the parts of two-wheelers led the family into building complete machines. In 1998, expecting the motorcycle industry to grow, the company set up Aeon Industry Co., Ltd. to manufacture and sell motorcycles, quad bikes and off-road vehicles.

Aeon Motor and the ATV business

In December 2003 Aeon Motor Co., Ltd. was established, taking over the production lines and commercial operations of Aeon Industry. Quad bikes and all-terrain vehicles became the core of the business: Aeon also became an ODM/OEM supplier to Polaris Industries, one of the world’s leading ATV manufacturers, which made it one of the few Taiwanese companies active in ATV production. Under the Aeon Motor brand the company sells mainly ATVs and motorcycles, with exports going primarily to Europe and the Americas, and at home it competes with Yamaha, SYM, Kymco, Suzuki and PGO.

The electric turn

As electric mobility gained momentum worldwide, Aeon began collaborating with the Gogoro Network, the Taiwanese battery-swapping system, and on 28 August 2019 launched its first electric scooter under the Aeon Smart Electric Vehicles brand, the Ai-1 Sport. The company also has a long-standing partnership with the Swiss firm Quadro Vehicles, now known as Qooder, covering manufacturing, engine supply and shared component technology for its three- and four-wheeled tilting scooters.

Design and features

  • Own factory, own name: Aeon designs and builds its vehicles in Taiwan rather than importing them under a foreign label.
  • ATVs for Polaris: contract production for one of the biggest names in all-terrain vehicles has been part of the business for years.
  • Export focus: the brand sells mainly ATVs and motorcycles, with Europe and the Americas as its principal markets.
  • Gogoro battery swapping: the electric scooters use the Gogoro Network, so they refuel at swap stations instead of a plug.
  • Tilting three-wheelers: the partnership with Quadro/Qooder covers manufacturing, engines and shared components for leaning trikes.

Aeon Motor versions

  • Standard scooters: the Co-In 125 and Dory 115/125 are air-cooled commuter scooters, and the STR 250/300 sits at the top of the petrol range.
  • Urban and Elite: two scooter families that Aeon has since discontinued.
  • MY 125/150: the small motorcycle line, in production since 2011.
  • Ai series: the electric scooters built around Gogoro battery swapping, from the Ai-1 of 2019 onwards.
  • Aeon 3D: a rebadged Quadro/Qooder 3D tilting three-wheeler.
  • ATVs and UTVs: the quad bikes and side-by-sides that remain the company’s traditional strength.
